Tepúa

The word Tepúa refers to an ax. Its origin comes from the language of the Ópatas, an indigenous tribe which inhabited the Sonoran Sierra Madre Mountains long before the Spaniards arrived. A small ax called Jaíbica is the main tool used for harvest during Traditional Bacanora production.

Destiladoras de Tepúa was formally established as a company on January 18, 2006. Even though, the Contreras family has produced Bacanora within Rancho Tepúa for more than 100 years. The activity was even carried out and remained active clandestinely during the 77-year Bacanora Prohibition in the state of Sonora

“This stuff is one of my favorite! Didn’t know they weren’t allowed to produce it for over 77 years.”

“it’s delicious in a very weird way. This is definitely in the “novel agave” category in my head as it’s soooo different. I will probably get a bottle and then it will be a slow “every once in a while” sipper…”

“Rancho Tepua Bacanora opened my eyes to the awesome things that the humble agave plant is capable of. I never felt particularly compelled to add any to my home bar. This spirit, by contrast, brims with earthy, herbaceous and aromatic flavors that I absolutely love. ”

“Delicious organic sotol notes. The bartender said that Dasylirion plant is a relative of the onion; that is now “implanted” in my mind. Charred yellow onion notes seem accurate here. More floral than Sotol dirt. Empty glass has nice cooked papaya aromas. Tasted at Hartwood in Tulum. Lot PAL20, Summer 2020, 108 liters, 47.9%. The two Sonoran Palmillas I’ve tried have been fantastic.”

“One of the better Bacanoras out there and good value – my bottle was under $60. It is a bit subtle with notes of wet wood, dragonfruit, and dry raisins. It starts a bit lactic but has a nice fruity finish. Lot 002 / 04 / 17 aged in glass for 200 days; 48.3%. ”
